“My toddler isn’t talking yet. Should I be worried?”

It is one of the most common questions families ask.

Sometimes parents hear:

“He’ll talk when he’s ready.”

“Her brother didn’t talk until he was three.”

“Just give it some time.”

Those comments may be well meaning, but when you have concerns about your child’s communication, you deserve more than guesses.

You deserve information.

Communication Is More Than Words

Children communicate in many ways before and while they are learning to talk.

They may communicate by looking, reaching, pointing, gesturing, making sounds, bringing something to an adult, using signs, or using words.

Communication starts before speech is perfect.

What Can Parents Try at Home?

  • Offer simple choices.
  • Pause and give your child time to respond.
  • Get face-to-face during play.
  • Use simple words and short phrases.
  • Follow your child’s interests.
  • Notice and respond to gestures, sounds, and attempts to communicate.

When Should I Ask for Help?

If you continue to have concerns about your child’s communication, it is okay to ask questions.

You do not need to diagnose your child before reaching out.

A concern is enough to start the conversation.
