Start With the Concern
Maybe your child is not talking as much as you expected.
Maybe walking, playing, feeding, or handling everyday routines seems harder.
Maybe your pediatrician or daycare provider has mentioned a concern.
Or maybe you simply feel that your child may need extra support.
You do not need a diagnosis before asking for help.
In South Carolina, families can begin the early intervention process through BabyNet when there are concerns about a child’s development.
What Happens After a Referral?
A referral starts the process of learning more about your child’s development.
The family may be asked about communication, movement, play, learning, meals, routines, and what is going well or feels difficult.
An assessment helps determine whether the child is eligible for early intervention services.
A referral does not automatically mean that a child qualifies for services. It simply starts the process.
What Happens After Eligibility?
Once a child is found eligible, the family chooses an early intervention provider.
A family may choose a provider such as Student Solutions Early Intervention & Case Management.
The early intervention provider then works with the family to develop the child’s Individualized Family Service Plan, or IFSP.
Together, the family and early intervention team talk about:
- what the child is doing well
- what the family is concerned about
- which routines are going well
- which routines are difficult
- what the family would like to see change
- what outcomes are most important
- what services and supports may be needed
The family’s voice is central to the process.
What Happens Next?
Once the IFSP is developed, early intervention services can begin.
The early interventionist works with the child and caregiver during everyday routines and helps the family use practical strategies throughout the week.
The goal is not to add more pressure to family life.
The goal is to help everyday moments become opportunities for learning.
